Player Bio

Leon Britton is an English central midfielder who plays for Swansea City. Born on 16th September 1982, Britton joined Arsenal’s Hale End junior academy as a nine-year-old before switching to West Ham in 1998 for £400,000 – then the highest fee paid for a 16-year-old. After making the fringes of the Irons’ first team, he joined Swansea in the former English Division Three (League Two) on loan in December 2002 – famously playing the final day 4-2 victory over Hull City that saved the club from relegation to the Football Conference. Along Alan Tate and Garry Monk, Britton holds the distinction of representing Swansea in all of English football’s top four divisions – winning promotions in 2005, 2008 and 2011 – over the course of more than 500 appearances with the club at the old Vetch Field ground and the Liberty Stadium. He joined Sheffield United on a free transfer in July 2010 but returned to the Liberty in the following January. At one point in 2011/12, Britton held the highest successful pass completion rate across the top European leagues, and the following season played in the 2013 League Cup final win over Bradford City. He was named Swansea captain in August 2016.
