No matter if it’s been called the UEFA Cup or the Europa League, the secondary club tournament in Europe has always been in the shadow of its big brother: the Champions League.
Yet that doesn’t mean the competition hasn’t provided intrigue, drama and incredible results over the years. And UEFA’s decision in 2016 to give the winners an automatic Champions League spot has certainly spiced things up.
Current Arsenal boss Unai Emery became the king of the Europa League after he guided the La Liga club to three straight victories between 2014 and 2016. He is on track for a fourth final, too, after the Gunners overcame Napoli in this year’s competition.
With the increased importance given to the tournament, it’s unlikely teams like Rangers and Zenit will ever make the final again. But the Europa League has become something of a breeding ground for Europe’s young talent, and this season the likes Luka Jović and João Félix have excelled for Eintracht Frankfurt and Benfica respectively.
But onto our quiz. Here we challenge you to name every player to win the UEFA Cup/Europa League Golden Boot since 199. We’ll be honest, this is not easy, so make sure you share your score and challenge your friends.
