In an exclusive interview with Football Whispers, former Liverpool academy coach turned author Dan Fieldsend discusses the inner workings of FSG’s long-term project for the Reds and explains why Jürgen Klopp is the perfect modern-day coach.
Fieldsend, who wrote The European Game – an exploration of different footballing cultures across the continent, also has forthright opinions on the state of the grassroots game.
He warns the gap between academy and, as he calls it, “street football”, is widening as the dearth of all-weather facilities hits those without professional clubs hardest during the cold winter months.
He believes it is time for the Premier League to act or the world’s biggest football brand will suffer long-term.
This is Dan’s second appearance in our Science of Football series. If you liked this episode but missed the first, then be sure to check it out here.
His book, already translated into several different languages, is available here and is a must-buy for any football fan.
