It will be difficult for Newcastle United fans to envisage anything more than a Premier League relegation scrap in at the business end of the season, which is why their January business (or lack thereof) could prove pivotal in the battle for survival.
It’s why in this week’s episode of Three Minute Myths, we joined Geordie fans at Stamford Bridge for their FA Cup fourth round tie against Chelsea and asked Magpies supporters what position their side needs to upgrade most.
Most were after a striker, and while a deadline day deal for Islam Slimani is close to completion, it was only a few days ago that Newcastle were linked with Nicolai Jørgensen. So in today’s show we analyse just how good an option Jorgensen would have been.
Perhaps more intriguingly, our data models suggest the Magpies’ attacking players aren’t actually doing too badly, and that, in fact, it was their midfielders letting the side down – so were Newcastle right to pursue Slimani, or indeed Jorgensen, at all?
Perhaps their efforts would have been better placed in finding an improvement on Jonjo Shelvey. But, as with the race for survival, we won’t know for sure until the final whistle blows on the final day of the campaign in May.
