Burnley have been lucky this season – or so say the stats in the latest episode of Three Minute Myths.
Our data scientists have looked into the numbers behind the excellent performances that have taken Sean Dyche’s side to seventh in the Premier League, and the results might disappoint many Claret fans.
While there are a variety of mitigating factors – Burnley’s unique style of pressing and Nick Pope‘s brilliance as stand-in goalkeeper are just two ingredients that could be repeated – the bottom line of this week’s episode is that the same Burnley side would struggle to lay claim to a top-half finish come May 2019.
The important sidenote is that, as Three Minute Myths states, the achievements made by Dyche and his team are still highly impressive. A side of Burnley’s stature and, more importantly, budget ought to be fighting relegation.
While luck may be the key factor in keeping them in seventh rather than 13th, it is tactical proficiency that ensures the Clarets remain a mid-table side, rather than relegation fodder.
Dyche deserves huge credit and the future remains positive for Burnley, even if this season’s success may have set expectations unrealistically high for the 2018/19 campaign.
