It must be a long time since Liverpool and Manchester United played each other pre-Christmas and were so far apart in the table.

Sixteen points separates them, and it looked like putting together a combined XI for these two teams would be a heavily skewed affair.

If both teams were fully fit, Anthony Martial might be the only United player to deserve inclusion against his Liverpool counterpart, Sadio Mané. And even then, it would be close.

United are hit by injuries at the moment, so we’ve assumed full-fitness for their players to open the options up.

“Smalling is injured, (Victor) Lindelof is injured, Darmian is injured, Martial is injured, Dalot is injured,” José Mourinho reeled off in his pre-match press conference.

Injuries Liverpool still count, though, so Trent Alexander-Arnold and Joe Gomez’s spaces are up for grabs. It looks likely that James Milner and Dejan Lovren will be the players to deputise on Sunday.
