The 24-year-old Portuguese international only moved to the Camp Nou last summer, joining from Valencia in a deal which could be worth up to €55million if conditional bonuses are triggered.
But Gomes disappointed in his maiden season with Barça and, according to the Telegraph, Spurs and West Ham are keen to take the former Benfica man on loan.
The 25-cap Portugal star does not lack for ability – he’s a fine passer and intelligent in his use of the ball – but, perhaps overawed by his new surroundings, he was too passive to act as an effective member of the Barça midfield.
Playmakers at Barcelona are expected to be daring and incisive; Gomes was too often happy to let Andrés Iniesta take responsibility for breaking the lines of the opposition.
A reported Juventus transfer target earlier in the summer and the subject of Manchester United transfer rumours not so long ago, it appears Barça, undergoing a somewhat unexpected overhaul at the moment, are ready to part ways with Gomes.
If he can rediscover his form and confidence, there is a terrific player there for a club to take a chance on. The only question, though, is how much damage has been done by his nightmare season in Catalonia, and whether he can fully recover.
Still only 24, there is clearly, judging by the amount of interest in the player, a belief Gomes has plenty left to offer at the highest level. Although he may not immediately appear a perfect fit for the intensity of the Premier League, a coach like Mauricio Pochettino could be the ideal man to reinvigorate the talented midfielder.
