A robust, ball-winner Deegan joined Shrewsbury Town in May 2016 having spent the previous two years at Southend United – with whom he won promotion via the 2014/15 League Two play-offs. Before moving to England Deegan had won two League of Ireland titles in his homeland with Bohemians, paving the way to the Championship with Coventry City and then Northampton Town via a season with Hibernian, where he was part of the side that reached the 2013 Scottish Cup final.
