Brown’s career has spanned three decades and more than 650 career appearances, and having signed for Port Vale in July 2014 he was made player/assistant manager of the side. Having started out in the Premier League in August 1995, Brown was part of the Manchester City side that fell down to the old Division Two before being promoted back to the top flight – all in the space of four years. Three years at Sheffield United followed for the tough-tackling midfielder before making the step back to the Premier League himself with Tottenham Hotspur, Fulham, Wigan Athletic and Portsmouth – he would play in the 2010 FA Cup final for the latter. Leeds United was his next port of call for three years before signing for Port Vale as a free agent.
