Having made more than 100 senior career appearances, Ranger signed for Southend United in August 2016 as a free agent after a month’s trial at Roots Hall. Ranger’s career has been intermittently beset by a number of disciplinary and criminal issues, meaning he has spent time without a club. The fast, skilful striker began his career at Newcastle United where he was part of the squad that won the Football League Championship in 2009/10. He would achieve another promotion while on loan in League One at Sheffield Wednesday in 2012, while he also spent spells with Swindon Town, Barnsley and Blackpool prior to joining Southend.
