Shay Given

Shay Given is an Irish goalkeeper, born on 20th April 1976, who plays for . Given was a member of the Celtic academy for a number of years before he joined Blackburn, but he could never hold down a first team place with the club. Loans to Swindon and Sunderland followed, with an eventual move to Newcastle United providing the Irishman the chance to play regularly. He was a Newcastle stalwart between his arrival in 1997 and his departure in 2009, when he joined Manchester City. He lost his place at Manchester City to Joe Hart in 2010, however, and joined Aston Villa in July 2011. Similarly, Given lost his role as number one at Villa in 2012-13. Once he left Villa, he signed for Stoke City in summer 2015 as backup to Jack Butland. Given made his Republic of Ireland debut in 1996 and earned over 100 caps for his country despite a brief retirement in 2012.
