He spent eight years at Barcelona, but injuries got in the way before he moved to Atletico Madrid in 2007. Spells at Genoa and Inter Milan followed before he moved to Paris in 2012 for €10 million. Due to his Italian great-grandparents, he possessed dual nationality, so despite representing Brazil at the 2003 CONCACAF Gold Cup, he was able to due make his Italy debut in 2011 due to a FIFA ruling. He has represented his adopted country at two European Championships and the 2014 World Cup.
